Statement by Dr.Surakiart Sathirathai, Chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council, concerning the developments in Myanmar :
There has been considerable concern expressed over the developments that have transpired in Myanmar. We all wish to see peace and stability prevail in Myanmar and the country continuing the great strides it has made on the democratic path.
While respecting the internal affairs of Myanmar, we would like to appeal for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and those currently under detention.
In the interest of the people of Myanmar, it is incumbent upon all sides concerned to engage in peaceful dialogue and reconciliation in order to resolve the situation and bring about a return to normalcy while upholding the principles of democracy and rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution of Myanmar.
