Big “Huawei” discloses the secrets of the 5G era

The time has come for the 5G seminar “5G Moving Thailand In The Changing World” on February 23 at the Pullman Kingpower Hotel in Soi Rangnam which is a seminar that opens new perspectives for Thais to learn about rapidly-changing technology.

Secretary General of National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) Takorn Tantasith who represents the telecom regulator is considered to be the “host” of the event and he said the reason for the seminar is that the whole world is aware and excited about 5G technology that will change things much more than 4G technology has ever done. However, some people are still ignorant about this which could make us outdated and lagging behind since we would not be able to adapt in time.

Mr. Takorn recalled the development of communications technology that began in 2012 with 3G technology up until 2017 and which is now 4G technology. The majority of Thais are aware of the changes in the use of mobile phones or smartphones that can do more than answer calls or make outgoing calls, he said, while the coming of 5G technology which is expected to be available by 2020 will see huge advances over 4G in terms of human behaviour and in the way of doing business, especially in the industrial sector since 5G is over 30 times faster than 4G.

“What we need to do now is to communicate to the public how 5G technology will play a role for the world and for Thailand and at this seminar that Huawei and Ericsson will be co-hosting with the NBTC there will be a booth that will demonstrate visually what 5G technology can do. Some of the devices will be showcased at the exhibition while content in the seminar will cover how we can prepare for 5G and for the changes that will happen.”

“Now there are three main changes in way we conduct our lives that will be different from the 4G era. These are: 1. connected cars that will help to reduce traffic congestion, 2. the Internet of Things (IoT) where devices can be connected to each other, and 3. remotely-controlled devices such as tele-medicine that can perform diagnoses of disease from a computer screen. This will lead to less human intervention and fewer people will be employed,” the Secretary of the NBTC said.

Mr. Zhou Dongfei, a Huawei 5G Marketing expert who is participating in the seminar, will explain the development of 5G at the global level and the direction in which this is heading. He will also outline what the major changes will be from the transition from 4G to 5G when the speed of the transmission of data will be at least 10 times higher than exiting technology as well as how this can be applied in the business world in the digital age. In addition, he will explain how important to digital society in the future the reduction of network latency from 10 milliseconds to just one millisecond or less will be and how the world will benefit when networks can provide simultaneous connections to billions of devices.

Mr. Dongfei said that this academic seminar would enable everyone to have a clearer picture of 5G development globally, step by step, and it would help to see the whole picture of the development of 5G around the world. Technological development is required, both in the laboratories and in the field, along with an understanding as to how the 5G ecosystem can be applied in the entertainment world in the future, as well as for medical and healthcare applications and when this can be done, and which countries will have the opportunity to apply 5G systems when the service is commercialized by 2020 and onwards.

The Huawei team added that, most importantly, Mr Lu Liming, Huawei’s Director for 5G Development, would open up a vision that cannot be missed in which he would explain how 5G technology and communications would change Thailand and in which direction, both socially and for the economy. This will demonstrate how, in Thailand, 5G will enable the development of target industries in 10 categories, to create smart cities, a low carbon society, for water management and to make Thailand become a modern medical hub in line with biotech as well as how start-ups and creative innovation will bring about economic value worth billions.

Mr. Surapong Paisitpatanapong, Vice President and Auto Industry spokesperson of the Federation of Thai Industries added that autonomous vehicles were still in research and development and had been discussed by the automotive industry for the past 2-3 years but were still undergoing trials. Because, although they can be manufactured, they could not navigate on all public highways. Possibly unmanned vehicles could have a safety zone coupled with an efficient control system with an alarm, although if continuous alarms were triggered this would create a problem, he added.

For Thailand, Mr Surapong sees that initially there might need to be a special area defined for unmanned vehicles such as the Eastern Special Economic Zone (EEC) or a special community where they might be allowed on specific routes. Thailand has a lot of motorcycles and if a motorcycle cut in front of an autonomous vehicle, this could create a problem. In foreign countries, there have been serious trials and laws are in the process of being drafted and this needs to be followed up on again.

Speaking about autonomous vehicles, Mr Surapong said he was confident this would not happen here soon. Now Thailand was focusing on electric vehicles (EV) and workers in the automotive industry believe they would be able to adjust because regular cars are still in high demand and so this workforce was still necessary.

Meanwhile EV cars are now in the process of adjusting their sources of components and it is believed that for EV manufacturing in Thailand over the next 5 years, initial manufacturing would focus on exports similar to energy-efficient cars or “eco cars”. Nowadays, 55-60% of automotive production was for export, while domestic sales were between 40% and 45% as the automobile market in Thailand needed to depend on export demand since the domestic market needed time to adjust, he said.

All this is an appetizer as to what 5G technology can deliver. If you need to learn more details about this then please attend the seminar “5G changes the world and will transform Thailand” on February 23 from 8.30 a.m. onwards at the Pullman Kingpower Hotel in Soi Rangnam.
