The DE Ministry, NBTC and CU conduct a big event to “5G Thailand : Rise to be ASEAN No.1” in conjunction with telecom giants to demonstrate innovation in the 5G era

in conjunction with telecom giants to demonstrate innovation in the 5G era On April 3, at Chulalongkorn University’s Mahitaladhibesra Building, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and Chulalongkorn University jointly hosted a seminar entitled “5G Thailand : Rise to be ASEAN No.1” The event was presided over by the Minister of Digital Economy and Society Dr.Pichet Durongkaveroj, NBTC Commissioner and Chairman General Sukit Khamasunthorn, Vice President for Innovation & New Development, Chulalongkorn University. Natcha Thawesaengskulthai and Managing Director of Matichon Plc. Thakoon Boonparn.

Mr.Thakoon said that previously the company had organized several seminars to draw attention to the latest trends regarding advanced 5G technology that had been co-sponsored by the NBTC with support from leading telecom companies – Huawei, AIS, Dtac, True and 3BB. The objective had been to communicate how important this technology will be for Thais in the early days and that the world will change again after the rapid changes in the 3G and 4G era.

This event, “5G Thailand : Rise to be ASEAN No.1”, in addition to acknowledging how important and imminent 5G technology is, along with providing a progress report in moving towards 5G so that Thailand does not lag behind globally, also shows innovative usage cases that will occur immediately after Thailand adopts 5G with some examples provided from the collaboration between the NBTC and Chulalongkorn University as well as other usage cases that have been developed by the private sector.

“5G Thailand : Rise to be ASEAN No.1” featured representatives from the government and the private sector who provided updates about the progress in preparing for 5G technology that will happen in Thailand over the next one to two years. These speakers included Dr.Pichet and Gen. Sukit along with Mr.Chaobin Yang, President of the 5G Product Line, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., Mr.Angus Yu, Technology Director, Asia GSMA, Mr.Weerawat Kiattipongthaworn, Chief Corporate Officer of Advanced Info Service Plc., Mrs.Alexandra Reich, Chief Executive Officer, Total Access Communication Plc or Dtac, Mr.Vichaow Rakphongphairoj, Joint Chairman
of True Move H Universal Communication Plc. and Mr.Yodchai Asawathongchai, 3BB Chief Operating Officer.

Subsequently there was a panel discussion featuring representatives of various agencies that use 5G including representatives of the industrial sector comprising Prof. Nijsri Channarong-Suwanwela of Chulalongkorn Hospital, Prof. Viboon Sangveraphunsiri, Head of the Regional Center of Robotic Technology of the Faculty of Engineering of Chulalongkorn University, Chalerm Duangyiwah, Senior Assistant Managing Director for Information Technology and Systems at the CPF IT Center Company and Julapong Limpasutham, Vice President of Thailand Post.

Mr.Thakoon said he hopes to host such an event again and that they will continue until Thailand has 5G and develops innovation to solve social problems in every dimension, including industry, healthcare, transportation, agriculture, logistics and that it will improve the quality of life for Thais.
